Sheriff Beth Arthur Receives the Tribute to Working Women Award

Arlington County Sheriff Beth Arthur was honored with the Washington Area Toyota Dealers’ Tribute to Working Women award, co- hosted by ABC 7 WJLA-TV on Friday, October 22nd.  For the past 16 years, this prestigious tribute has selected a handful of working women from hundreds of applications from candidates who have demonstrated a commitment and dedication to improve the community where they live and work. Sheriff Arthur was one of seven women named this year by a distinguished panel of judges, including executives from the automotive, employment, broadcast, and publishing industries.

Sheriff Arthur’s career with the Sheriff’s Office began in 1986 when she was hired as the Budget and Personnel Analyst, and was promoted to the Director of Administration in 1988 overseeing all budget, human resource, training and information technology functions.  These experiences led to her judiciary appointment to Sheriff of Arlington County in July 2000 and subsequent election in November 2000, with reelection in November 2003 and 2007.

Her professional memberships include the National Sheriffs’ Association; Virginia Sheriffs’ Association; and the American Correctional Association.  Sheriff Arthur was Chair of the Commonwealth of Virginia Criminal Justice Services Board from July 2005 through June 2010.  Sheriff Arthur is also a member of numerous state and local committees including:   Correctional Intelligence Task Force and Constitution and By-Laws Committee for the American Correctional Association; Jail, Detention & Corrections Committee and Education and Training Committee for the National Sheriffs’ Association; member Board of Directors and Legislative Committee for the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association.  Sheriff Arthur was the first woman to occupy a board position at the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association when she became Treasurer and she is currently Second Vice President.   Sheriff Arthur is also a lifetime member of Leadership Arlington, Class of 2001 and a member of the Board of Regents.

Sheriff Arthur’s community activities include membership in the Williamsburg Middle School and Yorktown High School Parent Teacher’s Associations, Rock Springs Civic Association, Arlington Committee of 100, the Arlington Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Arlington County Democratic Committee.
