On June 25, 2013, while serving civil process in Chantilly, VA, Master Deputy Sheriff Heather Lama responded to a radio call of a domestic dispute involving a knife about a block from her location. She was the first responder to the scene and found a hysterical woman splattered in blood running from the residence. A language barrier made it difficult for MDS Lama to fully understand the situation, but she determined that there was a strong possibility that there were victims with life-threatening injuries inside the residence. She proceeded inside and found a man with a severed finger and serious head wound, two male gunshot victims, a shotgun, a long rifle, and multiple rounds scattered around the victims. She immediately rendered aid while waiting for additional officers to arrive. Though two fatalities resulted from this incident, Master Deputy Sheriff Lama’s quick response helped ensure that additional deaths or more severe injuries did not occur.
