The following trainings are being hosted at the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office’s SOVA ICAC unit in Forest, VA. These trainings will equip law enforcement personnel with investigative skills relating to investigations into the online sexual exploitation of children. There is no cost to attend training, though offices sending personnel for training must be current members of either the Southern Virginia or Northern Virginia/DC ICAC Task Forces. Offices may seek reimbursement for meal and lodging expenses with an approved training request submitted to their respective Task Force.

ICAC ONLINE ADS – September 12-14, 2017

Overview: This 3 day course describes how online ads are being used to exploit children and how to investigate these posts.  This course will also instruct students how to post ads as part of a proactive investigation. Tips, tools and techniques will be discussed as well as advanced methods for identifying a suspect.  The use of online ads and child trafficking will also be addressed.

What will you gain from this course?

  • An understanding of how online ads are being used to exploit children
  • Ability to investigate and post online ad posts as part of a proactive investigation
  • Knowledge of some advanced methods used for identifying a suspect

ICAC BITTORRENT INVESTIGATIONS – October 3-5, 2017

Overview: This 2 or 3 day training program is designed to introduce experienced investigators to the BitTorrent file sharing network.  Students will learn how to install, configure and use the Roundup-BitTorrent tool to investigate the distribution of child pornography on the BitTorrent network.

What will you gain from taking this course?

  • Ability to utilize the skills and tools necessary to investigate the distribution of child pornography on the BitTorrent network
  • Be able to identify and prioritize targets to investigate in their jurisdiction
  • Understanding of the inner workings of the BitTorrent network
  • Hands-on experience learning the RoundUp BitTorrent tool to perform single source downloads from targets
  • Knowledge needed to navigate the ICACCOPS website and learn the importance of deconfliction
  • A refresh on P2P case law as it relates to these investigations

Prerequisites:  Students must possess a fundamental knowledge of IP addresses, hash values, ports, and port forwarding.

ADVANCED UNDERCOVER CHAT INVESTIGATIONS – October 31 – November 2, 2017

Overview: This course is offered as a two day or a three day class and provides experienced investigators with the latest tools and techniques necessary to combat online child exploitation.  This course focuses heavily on all aspects of undercover chatting, preserving the online evidence, utilizing mobile devices and applications.

What will you gain from this course?

  • Ability to create undercover personas and preserve online evidence
  • An understanding of chat tips and techniques
  • Knowledge to utilize mobile devices and applications in an undercover capacity

Prerequisites:  Students must have an active ICACCOPS account, previously completed the ICAC Online Ads (ICAC UC 101) course and have a working knowledge of IP addresses.
