Sheriff Leonard and deputies from the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s office recently participated in the Chesterfield County/City of Colonial Heights 2017 Rule of Law Program at the Thomas R. Fulghum Conference Center. The Honorable Vanessa Jones of the Chesterfield /Colonial Heights Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court welcomed the 120 high school juniors to the program. The Honorable Cleo Powell, Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia, held a mock trial in which Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Melissa Hoy and attorney Alicia Battle argued a case on appeal. Students were selected to sit with Justice Powell as associate justices to “decide” whether to overturn the conviction. The students participated in small group sessions, where scenarios relevant to their lives were discussed, and learned about the importance of the rule of law in their daily lives.
