Sheriff Gabe Morgan presented a certificate of award to student Amari Holmes. The Norfolk State University junior received a $1,000 scholarship from the Va. Sheriffs’ Institute. It’s given each year to Virginia students pursuing a career in a criminal justice field. “This will really help. Books can cost $500, so this is great,” she said as she thanked Sheriff Morgan and the VSI for the scholarship and support. Sheriff Morgan told Ms. Holmes that education can level the playing field no matter where you come from. “It’s a true equalizer,” he stressed. “You may not see it now, but it’s going to be worth it.”
Part of the application process required Ms. Holmes to meet with Sheriff Morgan to get his support. In all, four students from Newport News were granted $1,000 scholarships for their education from the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute. The others are Daniel D. Clayton, Annabelle K. Hoffman and Aaron M. Ward. All three are attending Virginia Tech.
