K-9 deputies of the Newport News Sheriff’s Office now have specially-designed first aid kits.

Cpl. Pinkney and Odin, Cpl. Taylor and Bety and Deputy Blyth and Cooper were presented Buddy Bags on August 16.  The bags were purchased and presented by On Command Dog Training of Yorktown.

The kits contain equipment that could save the dog’s life in an emergency.  They include specialized cone-shaped oxygen masks, burn sheets, bandages, rinsing saline, protective restraints and other items.

The deputies presented On Command’s owner, Becky Hendrickson, with a certificate of appreciation from Sheriff Gabe Morgan.

“Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.  Working dogs could require immediate medical attention just like any other deputy on the job.  These first aid kits by K9 Defender Fund give us the specialized equipment needed to render help to our partners in an emergency,” said Cpl. K. Taylor, who heads the NNSO K-9 unit.

Cpl. Taylor also presented a sheriff’s coin to Hampton Police Master Trainer MPO Hendrickson and his K-9 Buckshot for their assistance.
