Virginia Sheriffs’ Association Remembers Dr. Hughes Melton, Commissioner of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services

Richmond, VA – The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association (VSA) is saddened to hear the news of the passing of Dr. Hughes Melton, Commissioner of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.

According to a statement from Governor Northam, Dr. Hugh Melton passed away from injuries from a car accident in which he was involved in Augusta County on Wednesday of this week.

“The VSA had been meeting with Dr. Melton and his staff on mental health issues that affect law enforcement in Virginia. Dr. Melton was a pleasure to work with and his commitment to the health and safety of everyone involved in the TDO process was apparent,” said John W. Jones, Executive Director, Virginia Sheriffs’ Association.

Jones continued “We express our sincere condolences to Dr. Melton’s family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time.”
