The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association extends its condolences to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office on the passing of Retired Cumberland County Sheriff Marshall S. Smith. At the age of 82, Smith passed away on Saturday December 11, 2021 at his farm in Buckingham County, Virginia. Sheriff Smith began his career on January 1, 1964 as a Deputy Sheriff in Cumberland County. He was elected Sheriff and began his terms of office on January 1, 1988. He served as Sheriff until his retirement on August 31, 1994. He enjoyed farming, bird and racoon hunting and raising horses. Due to concerns over COVID-19, all services will be private.
