In looking at SB59, we see several issues for Sheriffs’ Offices. Consistent with longstanding Virginia Sheriffs’ Association protocol to discuss a bill with the patron before we publicly oppose it, I reached out directly to Senator Hackworth to discuss our concerns. Senator Hackworth was instrumental in providing the pay increase to deputies statewide during the challenging 2021 General Assembly session. And again on this issue, he was receptive to the VSA concerns. After discussing the bill with Senator Hackworth, he has agreed not to pursue the bill. Senator Hackworth has expressed he is looking forward to working with the law enforcement community in the upcoming session.
