The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association sends our deepest condolences to Smyth County Sheriff Chip Shuler and the family of Sheriff’s Deputy Hunter Reedy, whose life was lost in the line of duty, Friday, August 9. We also pray for the recovery of another sheriff’s deputy who was injured and flown to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
In a statement to News Channel 11, Sheriff Shuler called Reedy an “absolute hero.” He was a husband and father of three and had been in law enforcement for seven years. “This was a good, decent man who had a family, a young family, and he’s going to be missed by all of us,” Shuler said.
The Virginia State Police is investigating the fatal shooting and released this statement Friday night.
Funeral services are pending. VSA will provide more details once they are available.
We encourage you to keep the entire Smyth County community in your thoughts and prayers.
