The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association (VSA) expresses its deepest condolences to the family of retired Virginia State Police (VSP) Superintendent W. Gerald Massengill, whose passing marks the loss of a highly respected leader in Virginia’s law enforcement community. Colonel Massengill proudly served the VSP from 1966 to 2003, leading the department as Superintendent from 2000 to 2003.
“The members of the VSA express our deepest condolences to the Massengill family,” said John W. Jones, Executive Director of the VSA. “Colonel Massengill distinguished himself as the superintendent of the Virginia State Police and is remembered as a gentle professional that led with the highest degree of integrity. Services to honor Colonel Massengill’s remarkable legacy will be held at Ocran United Methodist Church, 20221 Cox Road, Sutherland, VA 23885. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 4, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, followed by interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Sutherland Ruritan Club, P.O. Box 57, Sutherland, VA 23885, continuing Colonel Massengill’s lifelong mission of service to others.
