The Voice of Virginia’s Sheriffs & Deputies

The Powhatan Sheriff’s Office extends its heartfelt thanks to Special Deputy Brad Hughes for his unwavering dedication, courage, and service. His strength in overcoming his injuries is nothing short of inspiring, and his continued commitment to protecting and serving our community does not go unnoticed.

On March 17, 2014, while assisting the Chesterfield Police Department at the scene of a 17-car pileup during an ice storm, Special Deputy Hughes was struck by a distracted driver. The impact nearly took his life and ultimately resulted in the amputation of both legs. What could have ended in tragedy became a powerful turning point – one that defined his personal and professional mission to prevent distracted driving and save lives.

Since that day, Special Deputy Hughes has dedicated himself to public safety advocacy. His tireless efforts have earned him widespread recognition, including the 2025 Virginia Highway Safety Award – Rising Star Award, the 2025 Cole Sydnor Trauma Survivor Giving Back Award, and the 2024 Martian H. Schlosser Award for Traffic Safety Activism.

These awards reflect not only Special Deputy Hughes’ resilience and leadership, but also his enduring commitment to making our roads safer for all Virginians. The Powhatan Sheriff’s Office is proud to recognize his service and achievements.

Congratulations, Special Deputy Hughes, and thank you for your extraordinary contributions to public safety.
