The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has removed the list of so-called “sanctuary cities” from its website.
Sheriffs across Virginia and indeed across the nation were wrongly characterized as uncooperative with federal agencies, leading to unnecessary confusion and an erosion of public trust in many communities. DHS did not provide information regarding the source of the designation, the criteria used to compile the list, or guidance for local governments seeking clarification.
The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association (VSA) maintains that any concerns related to immigration enforcement should begin with open dialogue between federal agencies and local government officials, including law enforcement. Immigration matters intersect with many areas of public service and should not be viewed solely through a law enforcement lens.
VSA members remain committed to working collaboratively with our federal partners to ensure the safety and well-being of the communities we serve.
