The Office of the Sheriff for Rockbridge County and Lexington City, in partnership with the Buena Vista Police Department and the Lexington VA Police Department, has been actively investigating a recent series of thefts occurring throughout the region.

Over the past several weeks, this joint investigation has required a significant law enforcement presence in multiple areas, including Brownsburg, Kerrs Creek, Lexington, Raphine, Rockbridge Baths, and Walkers Creek. These coordinated efforts have now led to a major development in the case.

On June 13th 2025, law enforcement took Charles Derek Mayo, age 33, of Natural Bridge Station, into custody in Buena Vista. Mayo is currently being held at the Rockbridge Regional Jail on charges of Contempt of Court and multiple counts of Grand Larceny.

Sheriff Tony McFaddin stated, “This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and we anticipate that additional charges may be forthcoming. We are asking anyone who may have information or security camera footage of Mr. Mayo to please come forward. Community input is a vital part of our ability to resolve these cases thoroughly and effectively.”

Anyone with relevant information or security camera footage is urged to contact Chief Deputy Donald Schley at 540-464-9232 or via email at [email protected].

We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation during this investigation. The unified efforts of our local law enforcement agencies underscore our commitment to protecting our communities and holding those who commit crimes accountable.

We also extend our sincere thanks to our law enforcement partners at the Buena Vista Police Department and the Lexington Police Department for their ongoing support, collaboration, and dedication throughout this investigation.
