A recent drug smuggling attempt at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail was successfully intercepted thanks in part to the keen nose of K9 Jaxon and the diligence of his handler, Deputy Grant-Oliver, of the Newport News Sheriff’s Office (NNSO).
The pair’s efforts were instrumental in aiding the arrest of both an inmate and a visitor, who now face charges for conspiring to introduce narcotics into the facility. Their swift and effective response not only halted the smuggling attempt but underscored the vital role K9 teams play in safeguarding our jails, courthouses, other facilities and public venues.
K9 Jaxon, a Belgian Malinois, is one of the newest additions to the NNSO K9 Unit. Both he and Deputy Grant-Oliver recently completed intensive narcotics detection training, preparing them for exactly the kind of situation they encountered at one of their neighboring law enforcement partners correctional facilities. As this case shows, their training paid off.
“Our K9 teams are more than just a line of defense — they are a vital component of our overall strategy to maintain the safety and security of our facilities,” said Sheriff Gabe Morgan. “We’re proud of Deputy Grant-Oliver and K9 Jaxon for their professionalism and effectiveness.”
Beyond their responsibilities within NNSO’s courthouse and jail operations, these K9 teams often support neighboring law enforcement agencies, further contributing to public safety across the region.
