At approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 10, King George County Sheriff’s Office (KGSO) deputies were alerted by an automatic license plate reader (ALPR) that a stolen vehicle was traveling in the county. Deputies located the vehicle in the Dahlgren area, where it fled at a high rate of speed, initiating a pursuit.
As the vehicle headed northbound on Route 301, deputies deployed spike strips, which the suspect vehicle struck. It continued onto the bridge into Maryland, where Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) officers, with assistance from KGSO deputies, successfully brought the vehicle to a stop.
Four suspects are currently under investigation for a series of vehicle thefts in Maryland and Virginia and were arrested at the scene. Because the case involves juveniles and is still under investigation, no further information about the suspects is being released at this time.
“This is a perfect example of what license plate readers can do to enhance law enforcement’s abilities with minimal use of resources,” said King George County Sheriff Chris Giles.
