The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office (VBSO) held a Promotion Ceremony Oct. 16, 2025, at Virginia Beach City Hall. Three master deputies with combined service totaling nearly 26 years were promoted to sergeants under Sheriff Rocky Holcomb.
“Today we honor not just promotions but hard work, leadership and dedication that these crimefighters have earned. Being promoted to the rank of sergeant is not just about a new title or a new set of stripes; it’s about stepping into a role greater than you can imagine, with the responsibility you have and care and welfare for the troops that are under your command,” Sheriff Rocky Holcomb said. “Going from the rank of master deputy to sergeant, you now leave behind the silver badge, and you move to the gold badge, and we know that the gold badge, like all badges, is a high standard for excellence that you will have to carry.”
The promotions included: Sgt. Nicholas King, Sgt. Joseph McBride and Sgt. Amanda Mengel. The promotion process at the VBSO is extremely competitive at every level. For deputies, it weighs performance, experience, tenure, leadership, volunteerism, training and education.
Congratulations to our new sergeants!
