The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association proudly welcomed the Commonwealth’s newest sheriffs during a reception and dinner held as part of the VSA’s New Sheriffs’ School in Richmond, December 2-4, 2025. The program, held every two years, provides incoming sheriffs with essential training, guidance, and connections as they prepare to lead their offices and serve their communities.
New Sheriffs’ School brings together VSA and VSI leadership, subject-matter experts, and experienced sheriffs to offer practical instruction on topics such as accounting practices, conflict of interest laws, forensic science services, FOIA, personnel management, legislative relationships, and operational responsibilities. The three-day agenda also includes peer learning, networking opportunities, and discussions on current challenges facing sheriffs across the Commonwealth.
“We are honored to welcome the Commonwealth’s newest sheriffs and support them as they begin this important chapter of leadership and service,” said John W. Jones, VSA Executive Director. “New Sheriffs’ School equips each incoming sheriff with the knowledge, resources, and relationships needed to lead effectively from day one.”
VSA proudly recognizes the new sheriffs:

- Sheriff Rashawn Cowles, City of Fredericksburg
- Sheriff Anthony R. Cline, Wythe County
- Sheriff Gary Hash, Grayson County
- Sheriff David D. Miles, City of Suffolk
