King George County Sheriff Chris Giles has announced that he will retire at the end of 2026 after 36 years in law enforcement.
Sheriff Giles made the announcement during a recent King George County Board of Supervisors meeting. Although his current term runs through Dec. 31, 2027, he has petitioned the King George Circuit Court to appoint Maj. Patrick Weston to serve the remaining year of his term. Sheriff Giles noted that it has long been a tradition in King George County for the sitting sheriff to retire one year before the end of a term and pass leadership to the agency’s highest-ranking deputy.
In a statement announcing his retirement, Sheriff Giles reflected on his career, expressed gratitude to the members of the King George Sheriff’s Office and the community, and shared his confidence in the agency’s future leadership.
“Serving as Sheriff has been the honor of a lifetime. When I first took this oath, I promised to uphold the law, protect this community, and lead with integrity. Every day since, I have done my very best to keep that promise. Together, we have faced challenges, celebrated victories, and worked tirelessly to make our county a safer place to live, work, and raise our families.
I am incredibly proud of the men and women of the King George Sheriff’s Office. They are some of the most dedicated, courageous, and compassionate professionals I have ever known. They run toward danger when others run away. They show up at all hours, in all conditions, not for recognition, but because they care deeply about this community. It has been my privilege to serve alongside them.
I would like to thank our community partners, civic leaders, and citizens: for their trust. Law enforcement is strongest when it works hand in hand with the people it serves. Their support, their feedback, and even their criticism has helped us grow and improve.
This retirement is not an ending, but a new chapter. While I may be stepping away from the office, I will never stop caring about this community. I have complete confidence in the Deputies who will continue the mission with honor and dedication.
Thank you for allowing me to serve. Thank you for your trust. And thank you for the opportunity to spend my career doing what I believe is one of the most important callings there is.
