The Voice of Virginia’s Sheriffs & Deputies

The Virginia Sheriffs’ Association (VSA) presented the 2026 Deputy Sheriff of the Year, Dispatcher of the Year, and Valor Awards at the VSA Annual Conference on September 15, 2026, at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront Marriott.

“Today, we recognize individuals whose actions have brought great credit to their agencies and to the law enforcement profession,” said Accomack County Sheriff W. Todd Wessells, Chairman of the VSA Awards Committee. “Whether carrying a difficult investigation through to justice, guiding others through a critical emergency, or responding courageously when lives were at risk, each honoree demonstrated exceptional judgment and commitment to duty. It is an honor to present these awards before their colleagues from across the Commonwealth.”

“The stories behind these awards show what service above self looks like in practice,” said John W. Jones, Executive Director of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association. “This year’s honorees stepped forward during demanding and dangerous moments, bringing skill, compassion, and resolve to people who needed them. We are proud to recognize their contributions and deeply grateful for the difference they have made in their communities.”

While all of this year’s nominees were deserving, the committee selected the following recipients for their outstanding service and for going above and beyond the call of duty. Read about their contributions below.
