On Tuesday, June 18, Virginia held primary elections across the Commonwealth.  In the Republican Senate primary, five candidates ran for the opportunity to challenge sitting Senator Tim Kaine.  A retired Navy Captain, Hung Cao, has been nominated to serve as the Republican candidate to challenge Senator Tim Kaine (D- Virginia) this fall. The race that garnered the most national attention was the Republican primary election in the 5th Congressional Election, where Representative Bob Good (R-5) was challenged by state Senator John McGuire (R-10).  Last night State Senator John McGuire claimed victory with a mere 327 vote lead in a race that at this writing is too close to call.  Other Congressional races concluded the Republican and Democrats for the fall elections, including:

  • 1st Congressional District: Democratic Leslie Mehta won the Democratic nomination to challenge Representative Rob Wittman (R – 1st)
  • 2nd Congressional District: Democratic Missy Cotter Smasal won the Democratic nomination to challenge Representative Jen Kiggans (R-2nd)
  • 5th Congressional District: Democrat Gloria Tinsley Witt will challenge the winner of the Republican Primary, of which as of this writing State Senator John McGuire (R-10 has claimed victory
  • 7th Congressional District: Democrat Eugene Vindman will challenge Republican candidate Derrick Anderson
  • 10th Congressional District: State Senator Suhas Subramanyam (D-32 ) will challenge Republican candidate Mike Clancy; this is the seat left vacant due to the retirement of Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-10).
