Get to Know Your Virginia Sheriffs – Dinwiddie County Sheriff Adams

1. What new initiatives do you plan to focus on?
My focus will be on assuring that the deputies treat citizens as they deserve, continuing to promote a transparent office, and having deputies work to establish trust in the community.

2. How has COVID-19 impacted you, your office, your work?
Being a smaller office, if an employee or deputy is exposed and must quarantine, losing them for 14 days can put a strain on operations. Traffic enforcement and interaction with the public is limited. Courts require more deputies to adjust to COVID requirements for continued operation of the courts.

3. In light of the social unrest across Virginia and the nation, how can the sheriff’s office and law enforcement as a whole work to build trust among their communities?
I currently participate in the Dinwiddie County task force with Dinwiddie County to see what we can do to improve racial relations in the county. I am also on a committee with Virginia State University, which includes all of the police chiefs within the area. This committee’s purpose is to build trust and to change the way citizens view law enforcement.

4. To what do you look forward most about your job?
I enjoy helping everyone and anyone in need. I am known throughout the community to go out of my way to help people and treat everyone the same.

5. Who have been your mentors and/or role models in your life/career?
My mother and father have been my role models and the previous Sheriffs of Dinwiddie County I worked with have been my mentors. 

6. What do you enjoy doing in your time away from work?
I enjoy hunting, fishing, and working on my tractors.

7. What are some of your favorite songs on your music playlist?
I enjoy classic country and 70’s rock.

8. What is your favorite book?
The Bible is my favorite book.

9. What sports/teams do you root for?
I root for Virginia Tech.

10. What drew you to law enforcement?
My interest in law enforcement came through my brother, who is now a retired Chesterfield County Police Officer.

11. What did you do before being elected to the office of sheriff?
I worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Dinwiddie County for 32 years.

12. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
God is who I look to, because with him on your side, any weapon formed against you will do no good. Having the power to lead someone down the right path who would otherwise be headed in the wrong direction is a superpower that we can all strive for.

13. If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be?
I would like to visit Alaska.

14. What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the confidence the citizens of Dinwiddie County have in me to elect me three times as their sheriff.

15. What is your favorite movie genre?
I love to watch biopics.

16. What character trait do you most admire in others?
The traits I admire most are persistence, integrity, and devotion.
